Longtime Central Texas Prosecutor Cappy Eads Dies
BELTON (November 1, 2011)--Arthur C. "Cappy" Eads, who served as district attorney in Bell County from 1976 to 2000, died Tuesday morning, Bell County Judge Jon Burrows said in a brief statement Tuesday.
Eads died at his home after a battle with cancer.
“For 24 years Cappy provided distinguished service as the District Attorney of Bell County,” Burrows said.
“He was a noted and respected leader at the local, state and national levels. He will be missed.”
Bell County Sheriff Dan Smith echoed Burrows’ praise Tuesday.
“I have had the privilege of knowing Cappy for most of my law enforcement career,” Smith said.
“ He was one of the best trial lawyers I have ever witnessed in the courtroom. He had a unique ability to capture the attention of a jury and communicate facts in a simple and straightforward way,” Smith said.
“Cappy made better law enforcement officers out of all of us because he demanded excellence in investigations, report writing, evidence collection and thoroughness. By initiating case screening, he raised the bar and ensured the integrity of cases before arrests. He made our criminal justice system more accountable to the public,” he said.
During his term as DA, Eads served as president of the National District Attorney’s Association and as president of The Texas District and County Attorney’s Association.
Eads was a 1965 graduate of Southern Methodist University and a 1970 graduate of the Baylor University School of Law.
Since June, 2003, he had been Of Counsel to the Waco law firm of Tekell & Atkins, L.L.P, where he worked with his daughter and son-in-law.
His daughter, Angela Eads Tekell, is an attorney and a member of the Waco School Board and his son, George Eads, is a star of the CBS series “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.”
The State Bar of Texas named Eads prosecutor of the year in 1987 and in 1995 he won the Governor's Distinguished Service Award, Governor, State of Texas Crime Victim Clearinghouse.
Funeral arrangements for Eads are pending, under the direction of Dossman Funeral Home of, of Temple.
Eads will be laid to rest after a private service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Texas District and County Attorneys Foundation, on whose advisory committee Eads served.
